OralID – Oral Cancer Screening

OralID: Shine Light. Save Lives. Brian Howe, DDS Family Dentistry is committed to staying on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. Through the use of OralID, a specialty screening device, we’re able to help identify the signs of oral cancer at a much earlier stage, dramatically increasing the likelihood of survival.

What is OralID?

Prior to the invention of devices like OralID, dentists relied solely on the naked eye to detect abnormalities during oral cancer screenings. Because the symptoms of oral cancer are not always obvious, many patients wait too long to be screened, inadvertently allowing the disease to advance considerably.

Here’s where the use of OralID can make a huge difference. The device shines a florescent, non-invasive blue light into the patient’s mouth. When the light shines on healthy tissue, it fluoresces green; when it shines on abnormal tissue, it remains dark, due to a lack of florescence. Through the use of OralID, we’re able to spot cancerous and pre-cancerous legions at much earlier stages, helping to save lives!

Dr. Howe is pleased to partner with the Joan Levi Bisesi Foundation. This partnership benefits patients such that oral cancer diagnosis are referred and streamlined with the The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Did you know that…

40 percent of oral cancers are found in patients who do not present with any of the traditional risk factors or any other significant lifestyle risks?

The traditional risk factors of oral cancer include:

  • Previous history of oral cancer
  • Over 40 years of age
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Smokeless tobacco

To prove how passionate we are about the prevention and detection of this disease, we are including an OralID screening with regular dental hygiene appointment. This means patients, age 17 and older, receive an oral exam that looks closely for abnormal tissue. The exam is quick and painless and can literally help save your life. Please call our office to schedule, 740-393-2161.
